Arcade volunteer firefighter dies morning after fire

A volunteer firefighter in Arcade died Thursday the morning after he helped fight a structure fire.

According to a social media post from the Georgia State Firefighters Association, 64-year-old George "Johnny" Childs was found unresponsive in his personal vehicle outside of a business Thursday morning. He died that day at the hospital from cardiac arrest.

The previous afternoon, Childs reportedly helped put out a residential structure fire. According to the Firefighters Association, he had been a firefighter for 24 years.

Funeral services for Childs are scheduled for Tuesday, December 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jefferson Civic Center. The graveside service at Woodbrine Cemetery will include full firefighter honors. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Evans Funeral Home.
