CORNELIA – Cornelia firefighters not only battled fire but freezing water that resulted from their firefighting efforts early Thursday.

“At 3:40 a.m., we received the call for a structure fire at 260 Bonn Court,” said Cornelia Fire Marshal Josh Hazle. “The first engine crew arrived at 3:46 and had smoke and fire showing from a single-wide mobile home. There was only one occupant and they awoke to the fire, escaped and called 9-1-1.”

The fire was brought under control at 4:06 a.m. and units remained on scene until 5:45 a.m.

Hazle investigated the fire and said it appeared to have started from an electrical shortage in the wiring.

“The official cause is ‘cannot rule out electrical’,” Hazle said.

Because of water freezing from the supply line, salt was spread on Old Cleveland Road and Bonn Court, according to Hazle, who added the temperature was around 25 degrees at the time.

Habersham County Emergency Services Med 1, Captain 1, Battalion 1 and Cornelia Police Department assisted firefighters at the scene.
