Gunman dead after incident at dermatology office in Gainesville

A gunman has been shot and killed during an altercation with Gainesville police officers.

According to Sgt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department, officers were dispatched to Lanier Dermatology in the Sherwood Plaza Shopping Center on South Enota Avenue.

When they arrived, the officers encountered the suspect.

Holbrook said shots were fired and the suspect was hit. The suspect was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Holbrook said one officer was transported from the scene to the hospital with unknown injuries.

He said initial reports indicated no clients or staff members were injured.

There is no word at this point on what prompted the incident. 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist with the investigation.

The Gainesville Police Department is asking that people avoid the Sherwood Plaza area while the investigation is underway.
