Rabun County authorities arrest motorcyclist after finding 5 lbs. of meth in backpack

A Stockbridge man is in jail in Rabun County after authorities find five pounds of methamphetamine in his backpack.

A post on the Rabun County Sheriff's Office Facebook page said deputies took up a pursuit of a suspect out of Oconee County, S.C. in the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 30. Authorities in Oconee County alerted Rabun County deputies that the suspect was headed to Georgia on US 76. 

"Our deputies took over the pursuit in the area of Southeastern Expeditions on US 76," the social media post said. "While behind the fleeing motorcycle, deputies observed numerous traffic violations and continued the pursuit. At the intersection of US 76 and US 441, the motorcycle struck the raised median causing him to crash."

Deputies said as they arrested the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Thomas Fowler, they noticed his backpack was partially open and they saw what they believed to be drugs. 

The investigation revealed that Fowler was carrying approximately five lbs. of methamphetamine. Street value of the illegal drugs was placed at $42,500.

Fowler was charged with numerous traffic violations and trafficking in methamphetamine, according to information shared on social media.
