The Georgia Department of Transportation found enough dry weather to have crews paint the yellow and white stripes, move the construction barrels and redirect traffic across the new State Route 53 bridge that spans the Chestatee River, connecting Forsyth and Hall Counties.

GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland, sounding excited after nearly two days of delay caused by unrelenting rainfall, reminded drivers that the area is still a construction zone.  "I just want to remind you the speed limit is still 35, so please slow down through this work zone."

The opening had been scheduled for Wednesday morning but the wet pavement essentially eliminated the possibility of applying the paint strips directing traffic across the new concrete and steel span.

GDOT says final grading of approachways remains to be done.  Then the six-decade old truss bridge adjacent the new bridge will be dismantled and hauled away.  Completion of all these projects is expected in March...weather permitting.
