Thursday morning's rainy weather has prompted the Georgia Department of Transportation to postpone the opening of the new State Route 53 bridge over Lake Lanier.

GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland said officials have not rescheduled the opening of the replacement bridge.

"Crews will continue to evaluate the weather and reschedule this shift," Stricklanbd said in a press statement released just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The bridge replaces the old Boling Bridge. The old bridge will be demolished.

While the new bridge itself will be open to traffic in the near future, the full project will not be finished until March 2019. As Strickland noted in a separate press statement on Wednesday, GDOT still has some additional grading to finish on either side of the approaches to the new bridge. A final asphalt topping also needs to be done.
