UPDATE: Escaped Lumpkin County inmate captured

Lumpkin County Sheriff's Lt. Alan Roach has alerted AccessWDUN that James Dowdy, Jr. was recaptured around 5:10 PM Friday.

Residents in Lumpkin County are being advised to secure their homes and vehicles after an inmate escaped the Lumpkin County Detention Center Friday afternoon.

According to a social media post from Sheriff Stacy Jarrard, the inmate, identified as James Dowdy, Jr., 31, was last seen wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs.

He's said to be a white man with short, dark brown hair, standing about 6-foot-1 with a physically fit build. Dowdy allegedly ran into the woods while being transported between law enforcement facilties.

"If you see any suspicious activity, please call 911 immediately. We will update the community as we have information," said Jarrard.

Dowdy is not considered a violent offender, but deputies are not advising anyone to approach him, should they run into him.
