COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Former Gainesville High standout and former University of Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans was named the new Athletic Director for the University of Maryland on Monday.

Evans, 48, has served as the acting athletic director since Kevin Anderson went on sabbatical last fall. Evans continued in that role after Anderson officially left in mid-April. He was one of three finalists in the school's subsequent search, along with Temple's Patrick Kraft and former Tennessee A.D. John Currie.

Evans served as Athletic Director at Georgia from 2004-10. The Bulldogs won 13 national titles and 19 SEC titles during his tenure.

He resigned the position in 2010 in Athens after an arrest for driving under the influence.

Evans graduated from Gainesville High in 1988.
