Posted 1:49PM on Thursday 14th June 2018 ( 5 years ago )

Flowery Branch City Councilman Fred Richards, 70, has died, officials confirmed on Thursday.

Richards had served on the council since 2012, working on such projects as the new city hall, the pier at Flowery Branch Bay Park and the Lights Ferry Roundabout during his time in office.

"Councilman Richard's guidance and assistance on matters involving the city will be greatly missed by the mayor, the council and the staff," said Melissa McCain, city clerk, in a statement.

He also served on the Lake Lanier Convention and Visitors Bureau while also attending various meetings as a representative for Flowery Branch.

Richards was unopposed in his re-election bid in 2017.

He died in his sleep sometime Wednesday night, according to McCain.

Richards family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 19 at Flowery Branch City Hall. Memorial Park South Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements.
