GAINESVILLE – The Gainesville City Council gave tentative approval at their work session this morning to the proposed FY 2019 budget that was presented to them late last month. The measure will be placed on the agenda for final approval at the council’s voting session on Tuesday.
“There have been no changes made since the work session on May 31st and the council meeting on the fifth (June); everything that was presented then is identical, not one single item has been changed,” said Jeremy Perry, Chief Financial Officer for the city.
Little public opposition to the proposed budget was voiced at the required public hearings but some council members did report numerous conversations with their constituency about the proposed millage rate.
The sum total of the city’s millage rate will be 3.364-mils and is comprised of four separate components according to Perry. “…Fire Services, that’s 1.25-mils; Park and Rec will remain at 0.75; general government will be at 0.795; and debt services will be 0.569, the same as last year.”
The millage rate is the amount per $1,000 of property value that is used to calculate local property taxes. Assigned millage rates are multiplied by the total taxable value of the property to arrive at the property taxes. In Hall County the taxable value of a property is usually 40% of the assessed value.
