Downtown Gainesville to get free wi-fi thanks to grant

Posted 12:00PM on Saturday 9th June 2018 ( 5 years ago )

Free public wi-fi is coming to Downtown Gainesville, thanks to a $30,000 grant given to the city by the Appalachian Regional Commission.

The wi-fi will be available on the Downtown Square, Roosevelt Square, and "hopefully" the Midtown Greenway, according to Nikki Perry, city spokeswoman.

"We're looking for proposals on this project, for installation as well as the equipment costs through June 22. We're hoping to have the whole project installed by the end of this summer," said Perry in an interview with AccessWDUN.

The city already offers free wi-fi in government buildings, and the hope is that wi-fi access will make Downtown Gainesville a more attractive place, both for locals and for tourists.

"We hope that this will encourage people to take advantage of the outdoor space downtown. It's a beautiful time of year, and people love to sit outside and work outside. Just having wi-fi downtown will encourage people to come," said Perry.
