Hoschton mulls revival of town's municipal court

Posted 2:01PM on Sunday 3rd June 2018 ( 5 years ago )

Hoschton City Council is considering the revival of the town's municipal court, an entity that has been dormant since the economic recession nearly a decade ago.

City Council gave the motion, which includes a provision for appointing a judge to oversee the court, first reading approval at its meeting Friday afternoon, clearing it for a final vote at its next voting session in July, said April Plank, city administrator.

The court would oversee cases related to city code enforcement, and Plank said there are no immediate plans to re-establish the city's police department, which also folded during the economic recession.

"The older municipal court ordinance, a lot of it is based on the police department, " said Plank.

"So it was time to get that updated."

Criminal cases and traffic violations will still be handled through Jackson County, even if they occur in the Hoschton city limits.

If approved in July, the court would set up shop inside of Hoschton City Hall, once a judge is appointed.
