The Hall County Republican Party is sponsoring a Community Day on Sat., May 19, hoping to give local citizens a chance to interact one-on-one with local elected officials.

Hall GOP Chairman Matt Smith said the group will get help that day from the Republican Women of Hall County.

"We've been talking for six or seven months about having a day where we can invite our elected officials...and just have them at one location - as many as we can get there - and make it open to the community where folks can come out and meet their elected officials."

Smith said Hall County's elected officials are typically accessible, but citizens don't always have the chance to talk with them face to face.

"I'm hoping they'll [elected officials] come out and it'll be a good chance for the community to meet a few of them, shake their hands and just have an open dialogue with them," Smith said.

While Smith said it's possible some candidates for statewide office may show up at the event, it's designed specifically for local elected officials, as well as those running for local office. He said candidates will have the opportunity to address those in attendance and talk a little about their campaigns ahead of the May 22 primary.

Community Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Homestar building at 332 Washington Street just north of the Downtown Gainesville Square.

Smith said in additional to the meet-and-greet with local politicians, organizers will have activities for children, food trucks and gun safety presentations conducted by the Hall County Sheriff's Office.
