Top Sportsman driver Randy Alexander dies in crash at Atlanta Dragway

NHRA Top Sportsman driver Randy Alexander died from injuries suffered in a crash during Saturday's events at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway on Saturday.

Alexander was competing in the opening round of eliminations against Bob Mandell III when he lost control of his car moments after crossing the finish line and veered into the opposite lane, where his Chevrolet Corvette was struck by Mandell's car at nearly full speed.

Mandell was able to climb from his car under his own power, but Alexander need to be extricated by the NHRA Safety Safari. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he passed away from his injuries.

An official statement released by the NHRA reads:

It is with heavy hearts that we report Randy Alexander of Harvest, Ala., passed away at a local hospital after sustaining injuries in an on-track incident at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga. NHRA and the entire racing community extend their deepest condolences and their prayers to the participant’s family and friends. We also ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
