EASTABOGA, Ala. - After several near misses last year, Austin Horton drove to his first career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series victory on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama.

Horton, from Newnan, Georgia, competed full time in the series in 2017. He recorded several top five finishes that season, but could never get the top spot, despite winning the series championship that year.

Saturday night, in his first series event for the 2018 season, he finally scored that elusive win, as he parked it in victory lane for the first time.

It didn’t come easy, as Horton had to hold off three time series champion Ronnie Johnson and fellow Georgia driver Michael Page to get the victory.

The top three worked lapped traffic as they battled for the top spot, as Johnson made several attempts to get by Horton, but had to back off each time. Behind them lurked Page, who was looking for either driver to make a mistake and give him a chance to try and get the win.

In the end, Horton held them both at bay to take the win.

Johnson had to settle for second, with Page third, Jason Hiett in fourth and Cory Hedgecock in fifth.

Riley Hickman, Jadon Frame, Terry Smith, Grant Pearl and Donald McIntosh rounded out the top ten.

The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series will take the next two weeks off, returning to action on May 19 at Georgia’s Senoia Raceway.
