Gas leak causes temporary evacuation of several Gainesville stores

A gas leak on Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville led to several stores being evacuated this Sunday afternoon.

According to Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith, his department responded to a reported gas leak near the Home Depot store, where they found a heavy gas odor and advised all stores to evacuate.

He said personnel found a gas meter at the rear of the stores had been broken away from the building, possibly having been struck by a vehicle.  Once the meter was secured and the gas level dissipated, people were allowed to return to the businesses.

Smith said units were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
