UGA Climatologist weighs in on changing weather temps

National forecasters gave Georgia's temperatures a 50/50 chance of being above average through June, but the cold air keeps coming back.

UGA Climatologist Pam Knox told Georgia News Network the area remains in an El Nino phase,  which means cooler temperatures.

"We have a trough of low pressure that's been hanging out on the east coast and bringing in colder air for a lot of it. So, as long as that sticks around we're likely to stay cooler," Knox said.

Knox said shorter-term trends are more difficult to predict but she said, "All of the indicators are that we're going to be in neutral conditions really soon; maybe within the next month or two."

She said people in northeast Georgia should probably hold off on planting the warmer-weather plants, but don't worry because there's plenty of time for a warm-up.
