North Georgia softball's Smith, Gilliam nab PBC weekly honors

After a 4-0 week, University of North Georgia softball players Kylee Smith and Brittany Gilliam were named Peach Belt Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.

Smith was nearly flawless in three appearances last week, going 2-0 with one run allowed in 14.2 innings. The sophomore from Suwanee, Georgia, gave up five hits and struck out five in a 6-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville, then pitched a one-hit shutout over six innings in a 7-0 win at Georgia Southwestern, striking out seven.

Smith also made a relief appearance in game two at GSW going 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts. For the week, she had a 0.48 ERA and 18 strikeouts with one walk allowed and seven hits. She leads NCAA Division II with 225 strikeouts on the season and leads the PBC in wins and shutouts.

Gilliam hit .500 for the No. 2 Nighthawks with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. The senior first baseman from Chiefland, Florida, went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the first game of the week against Alabama-Hunstville. She then collected four hits in two games at Georgia Southwestern, including a 3-for-4 outing in game two with three doubles and four RBIs.

She had a .929 slugging percentage on the week, stole three bases in three attempts and scored three runs. Gilliam is currently sixth in the PBC in RBIs, eighth in on-base percentage and 14th in slugging.

The Nighthawks will travel to USC Aiken on Saturday for a PBC doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
