Jackson County Chief Magistrate Judge dies after battle with cancer

The Chief Magistrate Judge of Jackson County has died following a battle with cancer.

Sherri Thurmond Smith died Wednesday at the age of 50.
 
Smith served as Deputy Magistrate Judge for 21 years and was elected Chief Magistrate in 2016, according to her obituary. She served in that capacity until the time of her death. A social media post from Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum indicated Judge Smith had been battling cancer.
 
Funeral services for Judge Smith are Friday at 4 p.m. at Galilee Christian Church in Jefferson. Evans Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
