John Barge, a former principal at Chestatee High School, was among those qualifying last week for state Schools Superintendent, a job he left four years ago to run for governor.

Barge left Hall County in 2004 when he took a job with the state Department of Education.

He was elected state Schools Superintendent seven years later and served one term before his unsuccessful run for governor.

Most recently, Barge was superintendent of McIntosh County Schools.

He was one three Republicans, including incumbent Richard Woods, and three Democrats who qualified to run for the state post in the May 22 primaries, according to the Georgia Secretary of State's website.
