Ralston fires team-low round of 69 to lead Dogs

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Behind a career-best seventh-place showing by sophomore Trevor Phillips, the Georgia men’s golf team finished sixth on Tuesday in the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Bulldogs fired a 3-over 287 on Rio Mar Country Club’s par-71, 6,716-yard Ocean Course to wind up at 15-over 867 for the tournament. Clemson claimed team honors at 2-over 854.

Sophomore Spencer Ralston, from Gainesville, paced the Bulldogs on Tuesday with a 2-under 69. Senior Zach Healy signed for a 1-under 70, followed by Phillips and freshman Davis Thompson each with a 3-over 74. Junior David Mackey had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 4-over 75.

Phillips finished in the top 10 individually for the first time in his career at even-par 213, seven shy of Alabama’s Lee Hodges. Phillips’ previous bests were 14th-place efforts in two of the Bulldogs’ fall events.

Healy came in 12th at 1-over 214. Ralston landed at 7-over 220, followed by Mackey at 8-over 221 and Thompson at 17-over 230.

In the Puerto Rico Individual Classic on Rio Mar’s par-72, 6,902-yard River Course, freshman John Hilliard Catanzaro finished 13th at 11-over 227 following his final-round 8-over 80. Medalist honors went to Oklahoma’s Riley Casey at 1-under 215.

The Bulldogs will return to action next Monday and Tuesday in the Wexford Intercollegiate on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
