The developers of a proposed subdivision in Flowery Branch got final approval for their rezoning request Thursday.

The Flowery Branch City Council unanimously approved the second reading of the request that will make way for the proposed "Villages at East Main"  neighborhood on East Main Street between Atlanta Highway and Thurmond Tanner Parkway. The development will be directly across the street from another subdivision that was approved for rezoning in December of 2017.

The development is planned to feature 90 units, most of which will be townhomes with some detached single-family houses. It will sit on an 18-acre tract that backs up to Phil Neikro Boulevard, although city officials said the only entrance and exit to the neighborhood will be on East Main Street.

The city council also moved one step closer to approving a rezoning that would allow for a subdivision between Radford Road and Gainesville Street just south of McEver Road.

The council approved a first reading of the rezoning despite some citizens asking that the property instead be used for commercial development.

"I feel like with the commercial surrounding this piece of property and it being on McEver Road that it needs to be commercial," McEver Road resident Netra Jones told the council. "It seems like we're getting a lot of housing, but we're not concentrating on the commercial growth here."

The proposed development would sit on 21 acres with entrances and exits on both Radford Road and Gainesville Street. It is planned to feature 60 single family ranch-style houses.

The Flowery Branch City Council will give a final vote on the second reading of the rezoning request at its next meeting.
