The investigation will continue into a hazardous materials spill that closed Winder Highway in South Hall County for three hours Tuesday afternoon.
Hall County Interim Emergency Management Agency Director Casey Ramsey told AccessWDUN the substance was leaking from a tanker truck.
"There was a private HAZMAT company on scene when county fire crews arrived," Ramsey said. "They were able to offload the product and render the site safe. Hall County Fire Services rendered safety measures during that process."
He says the material did not warrant evacuating the area, but was still dangerous.
"It was a substance that was over 100 degrees," Ramsey said. "Therefore a little tricky in how the offloading was going to take place and how the cleanup was going to be handled.
Ramsey said an investigation is underway to determine what the substance was.
"That will be part of the investigation," Ramsey said. "We can do some characteristics to determine how safe if was for us to be around, but not determine what the substance was."
As a result of the leak, Winder Highway was closed in both directions from Martin Road to Union Church Road. The road closed around 4:30 p.m. and re-opened shortly after 7:30 p.m.
