One of the largest churches in Hall County is changing its name after 63 years.

With a membership vote Sunday, Feb. 11, Blackshear Place Baptist Church will now be known as Christ Place Church. According to a press statement, the name change will take place over the next few months as the church prepares to open a new worship center.

"The updated name reflects who we are, aligns with our vision and removes any unnecessary barriers to people hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ," read a press statement released Monday.

The statement said in order for the 9,000-member church to impact the region more successfully, it needs a "name that will remove barriers so that people will come to church and hear about Jesus."

The press statement indicated the church will continue to identify as a Southern Baptist Church and support SBC causes locally and internationally.

Senior Pastor Jeff Crook addressed the name change in a letter to church members.

"It’s not our name but Christ’s name that we acknowledge as the One who has done it all. With this in our hearts and minds, we are embracing the opportunity of a lifetime to name our church after its Founder," Crook said in the letter.

The 50-acre campus is located on property at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Mundy Mill Road in South Hall County.
