UNG women's hoops get back on track with win over USC Aiken

DAHLONEGA — Three point shooting gave the No. 21 North Georgia women's basketball team a big advantage as the Nighthawks got back on the winning track with an 84-64 win over USC Aiken Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hall.

USC Aiken won the tip and sunk a three-pointer to start the game off, but freshman Abbie Franklin answered back with her own three-pointer for UNG, setting the tone for the contest.

After the Nighthawks led by as many as eight in the first half, USC Aiken came back to narrow the gap to just one point, 39-38, near the end of the second quarter before Vanessa Agrusa shot a three-pointer at the buzzer, pulling the Nighthawks ahead 42-38. 

UNG had another buzzer-beating three pointer by Alli Jones to end the third quarter before the Nighthawks pulled away in the fourth to win the game, 84-64.

NOTES
- The Nighthawks shot 11-of-24 from distance, the third-best shooting performance from behind the arc this season.

- Three UNG players finished in double figures: Amber Skidgel (19), Julie McKie (16), and Abbie Franklin (10).

- USC Aiken's Kyrie' Chandler was the only Pacer to finish in double figures, leading all scorers with 24 points.

- UNG led 91.8 percent of the game, trailing only twice in the contest.

NEXT UP
Peach Belt Conference play will resume February 7 on the road at Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast through ESPN3 as part of the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase. Glory 1330 will carry the UNG broadcast on the radio with Craig Corbin and Lee Glenn on the call.
