A man from Jefferson with a lengthy criminal history has been charged with the false imprisonment and rape of a University of Georgia student on Wednesday.

The GBI and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department issued an appeal for information from the public Wednesday morning after the woman was abducted from a location on Broad Street in downtown Athens.

Witnesses saw the incident unfold and called 911. In addition, one witness followed the suspect vehicle and wrote down the tag number, according to the GBI.

The tag number led investigators to James William Daniels, 57.

Published reports from Atlanta media sources said Daniels has been charged in the past with child pornography and violent sexual assault.

Athens-Clarke County Police are asking anyone with specific information about this week's incident or anyone who might have been approached by Daniels in the past to contact Det. Michael Poole via email at [email protected] or by phone at  706-613-3330, extension 794.
