Auburn barn fire kills dog; no people injured

A fire that broke out early Monday morning at a pole barn in the Auburn area left a dog dead, though Barrow County Fire officials say no humans were injured in the blaze.

Firefighters were called to scene shortly after midnight on Ga. 124 and found the 900 square-foot building "with heavy fire showing and the tin roof collapsed," said Steve Rose, Barrow County EMS spokesman.

A neighbor told firefighters that there was a small apartment attached to the barn, but they weren't sure if the man who lived there was home or not.

"A quick search was conducted and it was determined that the man was likely not inside the apartment," said Rose in a statement.

Firefighters then found what is believed to be the cause of the fire: a downed power line.

As crews battled the fire, they found the body of a dog inside the barn. The barn is considered a total loss.
