As promised, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has moved the large osprey nests sitting atop Boling Bridge over Lake Lanier.
Part of the replacement plan for the big green bridge was the removal of the nests.
GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland said there was a provision in the contract, however, for engineers to create new places in the same area for the birds to nest.
"This week we did remove the osprey nests with our contractor," Strickland said. "They put devices on top of the current bridge to prevent future nesting. Right now is not nesting season - there were no birds in the nests that we removed."
When the ospreys migrate back, they will hopefully build new nests on 30-foot platforms that have been placed in the same area, according to Strickland.
"We did place these timber poles with platforms in close proximity...to their former home, so when they migrate back, they'll be able to see those and hopefully move in and be comfortable," Strickland said.
She said one of the platforms has already been installed, but the second one - which will be placed further south down the lake - will be installed next week.
The old Boling Bridge is being replaced. Osprey nests atop the structure have now been moved ahead of nesting season.
