The Oakwood City Council wasted no time before the National Championship game, swearing in new council members, getting an update on a new playground for city park and discussing the fate of a local hotel in their Monday night meeting.
City Manager Stan Brown said a notice will be sent to the Quality Inn on Mundy Mill Road that if they don't clean up their act in five days, they'll be shut down.
"We've have numerous fire inspections at that facility and a lot of items that we consider fire code violations need to be addressed before we're going to issue a new business license for this year," Brown said. "We'll give them a notice of violation, everything from emergency lights, exit lights, obstructions in hallways that need to be addressed, as well as some health and safety items. So we'll be issuing to them this week."
Brown supplied the media with copies of correspondence between both parties that detailed some of the violations. The correspondence indicated a total of five fire code inspections occurred from July 20, 2017 to January 2, 2018 and that the hotel received a C grade and U grade on two public health inspections during that time.
The most recent email in the correspondence indicated a clerk at the hotel told an inspector they were unable to correct violations because the owner was out of the country until January 22 and he authorized spending for these items.
The notice will be delivered to the hotel sometime this week. From there, they will have five days to respond and make corrections.
Council also unanimously approved a resolution for new playground equipment to be installed in city park by March. Earlier, council had selected three designs out of nine options. Then, children that attended Christmas in the Park last month took a vote.
"The one that we identified as the top choice was the one the children picked," said Brown of the design. "I think the uniqueness of it is we do have it combined so on the same apparatus you can have smaller children and larger children, but be separate from each other. So from a parenting standpoint it will be easier to supervise. And it also provides some other option outside of the main apparatus the can play on, some climbing bars and a merry-go-round."
The new equipment will be installed in the same parameters (50x60) as the current park. The previous playground equipment will be demolished or scrapped, due to wear and tear and its age.
And, as it was the first meeting of the year, Lamar Scroggs was sworn in as mayor, entering his 42nd year in the position. Two council members, the returning Pat Jones and newcomer Stephen Hendrix were sworn in as well.
Hendrix entered the world of local government after winning the seat over Sam Evans in November.
"It did go well," Hendrix said after his first meeting. "The council members and the mayor have been very gracious and welcoming." Hendrix said he was looking forward to working with the public and one of his goals was to take a closer look at traffic in the city. "I also work for a family business here in Oakwood and I also drive a school bus for the county. So traffic is something that's very important to me because I'm on the roads so much."
"I'm just trying to take it all in right now," he said.
