Girls basketball: Banks, Branch, Buford, Lakeview, Union, West Hall all take region wins

ELBERTON — Banks County took initial control of first place in Region 8-AA with a 49-38 win over Elbert County Friday night in battle of unbeaten region teams.

The Lady Leopards (12-3, 3-0 Region 8-AA) have six straight overall and ill put that on the line Saturday traveling to North Hall. They knocked off the Lady Trojans 51-44 earlier in the season.

Tip-off at North hall is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Banks County used a 15-5 second quarter to open up a 28-15 halftime lead and then held off several second half Lady Blue Devils charges to get the victory.

Jaycie Bowen had another strong game with 13 points and 6 rebounds for Banks County. Allison Smith added 11 points and Amber Williams 7 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Leopards. Kailynn Gilstrap contributed 8 points and Lauren Shedd had 4 points and 10 rebounds.

Elbert County (10-5, 3-1) has lost two of three since a six game win streak.

 

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 83,
CLARKE CENTRAL 50

The Lady Falcons used a 48-20 first half to grab control en route to the Region 8-AAAAA victory on the road.

The win pushed Flowery Branch (11-3, 3-1 Region 8-AAAAA) into a seocnd place tie with Cedar Shoals just one-half game behind front-runner Buford.

Ashley Scott led the Lady Falcons with 17 points. Caroline Wysocki added 16 points and 4 rebounds while Ashley Woodroffe had 13 points and 3 steals. Taniyah Worth had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists and Carly Shaw added 8 points and 6 rebounds for Flowery Branch.

The Lady Falcons, who are a perfect 4-0 at home so far, next will play host to Winder-Barrow on Saturday at 5 p.m.

 

BUFORD GIRLS 75,
WALNUT GROVE 27

The Lady Wolves used 23-6 first quarter to grab the lead and then rolled to the Region 8-AAAAA victory on the road.

Buford (11-2, 4-0 Region 8-AAAAA) led 58-13 at halftime and 69-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

CJ Johnson led 12 Buford scorers on the night with 15 points. Tate Walters had 11 points. Mary Walters and Ebony Grant had 9 points and Audrey Weiner 8 points for the Lady Wolves.

Buford next will play host to Johnson on Tuesday in a region battle.

 

UNION COUNTY GIRLS 53,
LUMPKIN COUNTY34

The Lady Panthers kept pace with North Hall for second place in Region 7-AAA with a key region win at home.

Union County (10-4, 3-1 Region 7-AAA) opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to blow open the game and led by as many as 26 late.

Bailey Daniel scored 14 of her team-high 19 points in the second half to lead Union County. Kait McCarter added 18 points for th Lady Panthers.

Freshman Isabel Davenport led Lumpkin County (6-7, 1-3) with 19 points.

Union County will travel to Andrews (N.C.) on Saturday. Lumpkin County travels to Fannin County on Saturday in another Region 7-AAA battle.

 

WEST HALL GIRLS 69,
BLESSED TRINITY 46

The Lady Spartans snapped a two-game losing streak with a dominating Region 7-AAAA victory at home.

Anna McKendree had a big game with 20 points to lead West Hall (10-7, 1-1 Region 7-AAAA). Kinsey Wilson added 14 points, Aashyah White 8 points, and Reagan Horton and India Johnson had 7 points each for the Lady Spartans.

West Hall wil take a week of before traveling to Chestatee next Friday for another Region 7-AAAA showdown.

 

LAKVIEW ACADEMY GIRLS 44,
TALLULAH FALLS 30

Lakeivew Academy set up a showdown for first place in Region 8-A with a solid road win on Friday.

The Lady Lions (8-6, 4-0 Region 8-A) will play host to Prince Avenue on Saturday. The Lady Wolverines (10-1 2-0) took on George Walton (7-4, 3-1) Friday night.

Sadie Thrailkill recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lakeview. Tori Taylor added 13 points and 6 rebounds for the Lady Lions.

 

MARIST GIRLS 38,
CHESTATEE 26

Chestatee's two-game win streak came to end in a Region 7-AAAA loss to Marist on the road.

Chestatee (6-10, 1-2 Region 7-AAAA) fell behind 12-4 after the first quarter and never recovered. Marist led 20-12 at halftime and took a 28-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

Linsey Caudell poured in 17 points to lead Chestatee but the Lady War Eagles managed just two points off the bench and no one else scored more than three points.

Marist was paced by 18 points from Diarra Odem.

Chestatee will play host to West Forsyth on Saturday in a non-region contest before jumping back into region play on Tuesday at home against Blessed Trinity.
