Basketball: Banks County sweeps Social Circle, sets up key 8-AA showdown with Elbert

SOCIAL CIRCLE — Both Banks County basketball teams took big wins Tuesday over Social Circle Tuesday night to set up a pair of key matchups with Elbert County in Region 8-AA.

The Banks County boys jumped on the Redskins early and then cruised to an 81-63 win. The girls also started strong before rolling to an 80-34 victory.

In the girls game, the Lady Leopards kept early pace with Putnam County and Elbert County atop the Region 8-AA standings with the victory.

It was the fifth straight win for the Lady Leopards (11-3, 2-0 Region 8-AA).

The Lady Leopards are just 3-2 on the road, however, and are in a critical stretch playing six of their next seven games away from Homer.

Banks County opened the game with a 17-6 spurt and took a 37-21 lead into halftime. The Lady Leopards dominated the second half outscoring the Lady Redskins 43-13 to put the game out of reach.

Jaycie Bowen had another big game with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Banks County. Maddie Thomas had 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and 5 assists. Allison Smith added 12 points and 5 assists and Lauren Shedd chipped in with 6 assists for the Lady Leopards.

In the boys game, Banks County (13-1, 2-0 Region 8-AA) ran out to a fast 22-8 lead and then maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The led 38-23 at halftime and 58-45 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dylan Orr and Darius Bonds both recorded double-doubles for the game. Orr finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks while Bonds had 12 points, 12 assists and 4 rebounds and steals. Carl Cleveland had 23 points and 5 rebounds and Gabe Martin added 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists and 3 steals for the Leopards.

Both teams will now travel to Elbert County on Friday in a huge matchup for first place for both squads.
