Local food bank raises record amount of money for meals

GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Mountain Food Bank held its Annual Empty Bowl Lunch Tuesday in Gainesville, and organizers said the event raised a record amount of money. 

At the heart of the fundraiser is ceramic bowls, that are turned into works of art and auctioned off. 

Organizers said the event raised enough money to provide 685,000 meals to the needy in Hall, Lumpkin, Union, Dawson and Forsyth counties. 

Also at the event, organization founding member Phillip Sartain was honored with the "Mike Banks Reflections of the Heart" award, given each year to individuals whose contributions reflect a true, "Heart of Giving".

More than 800 people attended the event.
