A memorial service will be held Monday for Shaw Carter, the 24-year-old heart transplant recipient from Gainesville, who battled heart disease and cancer during his lifetime.

Carter died Tuesday in Athens.

He was born with a congenital heart and underwent a heart transplant on Dec. 31, 2013.  The transplant led to a battle with post-transplant lymphoma but, according to his obituary, "Shaw also fought this battle and was healed."

Carter was an honor graduate from Gainesville High School, graduated Magna Cum Laude in May, 2016 from Young Harris College and was working on his Masters at the University of Georgia.

He volunteered over 200 hours for Mended Hearts at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, worked with the Heart Association, served as the Honorary Patient for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Hope and Will Ball, and mentored to pediatric cardiology patients.  Shaw had just served as a counselor for Children’s Health Care of Atlanta’s, Camp Independence, which is a camp for young organ recipients.

The memorial service will be held at 4:00 Monday at Gainesville First United Methodist Church.
