One of the first things you need to do when you decide to open a new school is come up with a name, and that's what the Hall County School District is doing now.

This week, a survey with a list of nine possible names for the new middle and high school combo in the South Hall area will be emailed to parents in the district. Superintendent Will Schofield told school board members the survey is intended only for those who live in the newly-drawn seventh district.

Superintendent Will Schofield said the initial list of nine possible names for the schools has been compiled over the last 18 months.

"Over the last year and a half, every time I've been in meetings with that community - whether it's been with students, whether it's been with faculty, whether it's been with community members - I've always asked them to brainstorm different names and we've kept a list of different names that people have come up with," Schofield said.

He said write-in suggestions will be accepted, as well.

On the list of possible names are five notable Georgians:

The other four names are geographic in nature:

Schofield said faculty and staff will be surveyed separately.

He said the goal is to have a name selected by August.
