Baldwin Farmers Market honors area heritage while supporting local producers

BALDWIN — The Baldwin Farmers Market will begin its season in earnest today (July 18), after an official opening ceremony and preliminary run Friday afternoon.

Hot temperatures Friday didn’t keep vendors from filling the new events space in downtown Baldwin to launch the inaugural season of the market, featuring fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, meats and other locally grown and locally made products.

“Today is the beginning of what’s to come on every Tuesday and Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m. each day,” said Mayor Jerry Neace.

Neace discussed the importance of three murals painted on walls of the outdoor facility, located on Airport Road in downtown Baldwin. The murals are based on the artwork of a well-known regional artist from Clarkesville.

“John Kollock did a great job with depicting that time for what Northeast Georgia was about, and it was about farming,” Neace said.

Nancy Kollock, wife of the late John Kollock, shared her reaction to the murals after seeing the finished products.

“I’m just thrilled with the murals,” Kollock said. “They’re absolutely beautiful, and I know John is happy and smiling down. I think this is going to be great. I also love farmers’ markets, so I know you all are going to enjoy that, too. Thank you so much for honoring him. It was his passion to depict the beauties of this countryside and to honor its people.”

City leaders say they hope by holding the market between 4 and 8 p.m., they will attract people headed home from work or on their way to or from dinner who want fresh produce, meats, honey, flowers and other items.
