CLARKESVILLE — Officers from eight Northeast Georgia law enforcement agencies made 10 arrests over two and one-half hours in Habersham County Thursday night.

Five of those arrests were for driving under the influence, while four others were for drugs.

"On July 13, the Habersham Sheriffs office and Demorest Police Department conducted multi-agency safety checks as part of the Northeast Traffic Enforcement Network monthly meeting,"said Capt. Floyd Canup of the Habersham County Sheriff's Office. "We were assisted by Georgia State Patrol, Gainesville P.D., Hall County S.O., Banks County S.O., Forsyth County S.O., and Jefferson P.D."

The first safety check was conducted at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.

The four arrests made during that check included two for drugs, one DUI, and one on a warrant from Toccoa P.D.

Additionally, several occupant safety citations were issued.

A subsequent safety check was conducted at Duncan Bridge Road (Ga. 384) and Mud Creek Road from 9 to 10:30 p.m.

That check resulted in six arrests, including four for DUI and two for drugs.

"These checks would not have been as successful if not for the assistance of all these agencies and sponsorship of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety," Canup said. "Dangerous drivers were taken off the highways of Habersham County during these safety checks and parents were made more aware of the safety of their children."
