Hall County Sheriff's Department installs flag drop box

Posted 10:13AM on Friday 14th July 2017 ( 6 years ago )

A flag retirement box is now located in the lobby of the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Flags dropped off in the box will be properly disposed of during a flag retirement ceremony, according to Hall County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Wilbanks.

The goal of the drop box is to keep in line with the U.S. Flag Code, which instructs that any flag that is no long fit to fly, such as being worn, discolored or tattered, should be destroyed in a "dignified way, preferably by burning."

"A lot of people simply don't know what the proper method is," Wilbanks said. "And we're more than happy to both provide that service and educate citizens on the right way to do it."

The flags should be folded respectfully before being placed in the box, either in the traditional triangle fold or as neatly as possible, Wilbanks said.

The flag drop box is in partnership with the National Association of Counties, the National Flag Foundation and the National Sheriff's Association. Wilbanks said the Sheriff's Office will partner with various local organizations, such as the American Legion and Boy Scouts, to make sure the flags are disposed of properly.

The Sheriff's Office is located at 2859 Browns Bridge Road and the box is available during business hours.
