Sugar Hill looks to hold millage rate steady, adoption to happen Monday

Posted 2:00PM on Saturday 8th July 2017 ( 6 years ago )

Sugar Hill City Council is looking to hold the millage rate steady at 3.8 mills, a rate that hasn't increased for 14 consecutive years.

A final public hearing is planned for Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at council's regular voting session, where a final vote on the millage rate adoption is scheduled to take place, said Paul Radford, city manager.

"Even during the Great Recession, we kept it at that level and just basically sucked it up. So now as we're recovering, our digest is growing, but so are expenses," said Radford.

The city will not be adopting its budget, which it does in January, unlike many local governments in the area.

The 2017 budget is approximately $20 million, said Radford.

The millage rate adoption comes in July so officials in Gwinnett County can collect property taxes.

"They will start sending out tax bills sometime in October. That's why we have to set the millage rate, so they know what to bill for," said Radford.

The public hearing and vote will be held at Sugar Hill City Hall.
