Wrestling: Young North Hall squad has strong showing in national tourney

NEW ORLEANS — A young North Hall wrestling team had a solid showing this past weekend in the Jazz Town Duals held at the Xavier University Convocation center in New Orleans.

The Trojans finished ninth out of the 30-team field, which featured some of the top high school and club programs from across the country.

North Hall opened pool competition on Saturday going 2-2 to finish in the top three. After falling to the New Orleans Wrestling Club and Best Trained out of Allen, Texas the Trojans defeated the CCISD Wrestling Club out of Houston, Texas, 54-27, and Granite City High School out of Illinois, 45-33. With the top three finish North Hall qualified for the 16-team championship bracket on Sunday.

The Trojans opened Sunday​'s championship bracket with a loss to reigning Class AAAAAAA Georgia champion Camden County. All teams that lost in the first round of the championship bracket were then moved to a new eight-team bracket.

In the first round the Trojans defeated CWC out of Tate, Florida to advance to the semifinals, where they defeated Southmoore, Oklahoma. The final round featured North Hall versus Buford with North Hall narrowly getting the victory 41-37 to finish in ninth place.

Going undefeated for the Trojans was Jacob Pedraza at 111-pounds. Jack Whitmire (105) and John Pedraza (131) finished the tournament 7-1.

North Hall's starting line up featured three freshmen, seven sophomores, three juniors, and just two seniors.
