A Stephens County deputy sheriff escaped injury when his department-issued patrol car left Big A Road in Toccoa Friday afternoon.

Lt. Riki Wise, 44, was driving in the right lane of Ga. 17 when his Chevrolet Impala exited the road, traveled down an embankment and struck a culvert, according to Trooper 1st Class J. Tucker of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

The incident happened near Captain D's, Tucker said.

"It was a medical issue of some type," Tucker said.

When emergency personnel arrived, Wise was unconscious, Tucker said. He was transported by ambulance to Stephens County Hospital, where Tucker said he was conscious and talking at last report.

The patrol car sustained minimal damage, Tucker said. The slowimpact didn't even activate the airbags.
