Gainesville Police investigators have obtained warrants for the arrest of a 34-year-old suspect in a Sunday morning shooting at Lenox Park Apartments, police said Tuesday morning.

The alleged gunman, Antonio Avila, has active warrants for aggravated assault, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, criminal trespass, theft by taking and obstruction of an emergency call, according to a media release from Sgt. Kevin Holbrook.

"Avila forced himself into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and assaulted her current boyfriend," Holbrook wrote.  "The suspect shot Benjamin Perez (45) in his torso before leaving the scene."

Perez was in stable condition when he was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center following the approximately 7:30 a.m. incident, according to Holbrook.

Investigators described Avila as Hispanic with brown eyes and black hair.  He's 5'5' tall and 250 lbs., with a tattoo on his right arm, Holbrook wrote.

Officers asked that anyone with information on Avila call the department at (770) 534-5252 or call 911.
