No injuries were reported in a Barrow County house fire that extensively damaged a single-story home late Friday night.
Firefighters and equipment from Stations 1, 6 and 7 were dispatched to the Winder-area fire on Hancock Bridge Road near Jefferson Highway around 10:00 p.m., according to Barrow EMS authorities.
"Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire coming from the roof and rear of the house of a single story home, said Steve Rose, Assistant Public Information Officer, "No one was at home at the time of the fire."
EMS Capt. Scott Dakin said crews initially attempted to make entry through the front door, but that a collapsing roof forced them to pull back and begin fighting the fire from outside the home. The bulk of the fire was extinguished during this phase of the attack.
"Units remained on scene for several hours to search for and eliminate any hidden fires still burning and buried under debris," Dakin added.
While the home was said to be extensively damaged by the fire, Dakin said the attached garage, including the vehicle inside, were "largely unburned."
"Firefighters found a dog in a crate in the garage and removed it from the building. The dog did not appear to suffer any injuries as a result of the fire," Dakin continued. "Barrow County Animal Control responded to the scene to assist with caring for the dog."
The cause of the fire in now under investigation, and it is unclear how many people may have been displaced as a result of the damage.
