CLARKESVILLE — A Cleveland man wanted for bank robberies in Cornelia and Clermont is back in Georgia to face charges.
Michael Anthony Gordon, 47, is charged by Cornelia police with two counts of kidnapping, aggravated assault, armed robbery, first-degree cruelty to children, possession of a firearm or knife during certain crimes, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft by deception, Habersham County Detention Center records show.
“Those are all associated with the bank robbery” at South State Bank inside Ingles in Cornelia at 2:30 p.m. April 26, said Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith. “They’re still investigating.”
No further details about specifics of the charges will be made public until the investigation is concluded, Smith said.
Now that Gordon has been returned from Colorado authorities, a Cornelia detective will interview Gordon regarding the case, Smith said.
“I’m extremely proud of the police department in its response to this crime, and the officers’ ability to identify and issue warrants for the person who did this,” Smith said.
In Hall County, Gordon faces outstanding warrants for armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with a robbery at United Community Bank in Clermont on April 5, according to Deputy Stephen Wilbanks.
