A woman is in stable condition and a man is in custody for a shooting incident that happened late Friday night at the Park Crossing Apartments in Gainesville.

The victim, who is an adult, was an innocent bystander in the case, and was shot in the upper torso, according to Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook.

The suspect, only described as an adult man, was arrested shortly after the shooting, which happened around 11 p.m.

"We are still actively investigating the incident, however it's important that the community know that this was not a random crime," said Holbrook.

Police have not ruled out drug-related activity as a pre-cursor to the crime.

The man allegedly was at the apartment complex on Park Hill Drive with the intention of confronting another person there. An argument broke out, and the suspect pulled out a gun and fired, hitting the woman.

"She was an innocent party to this reckless crime," said Holbrook.

Police are confident no other shooters are on the loose.

The identities of the suspect and victim are being withheld pending the police's investigation, Holbrook said.
