A former federal prosecutor in Georgia is said to be among the candidates for FBI Director, as President Trump seeks a replacement for James Cromey, whom he fired last week.
Larry Thompson was at one time U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, which includes Gainesville federal court. He also served as a deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush, and was the department's No. 2 from 2001 to 2003.
Among his most high-profile actions was allowing Syrian-born Canadian citizen Maher Arar to be deported to Syria, where he was tortured, after being falsely named as a terrorist.
Thompson has also held several high-level positions at PepsiCo.
According to law.uga.edu, he has served on the University of Georgia School of Law’s faculty as the holder of the John A. Sibley Chair of Corporate and Business Law since 2011. He is presently a member of the Faculty Division of the law school's Dean Rusk International Law Center Council.
