GAINESVILLE — James Mason, a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame from Dillard, won his third Yamaha Georgia Senior Open presented by BDNA contested at the Chattahoochee Golf Course in Gainesville. Mason fired a second round of 3-under par 69 for a two-day total of 10-under par 134 and defeated PGA professional Sonny Skinner from Sylvester by two shots.
Mason started the day with a one shot lead after an opening round 65. After a bogey on the first hole, Mason made birdies on three of his next seven holes to get to 9-under par for the championship and fired a back nine of 35 to capture the title. He also won in 2001 and 2015.
For his efforts, Mason earned a check for $2,500. Low Amateur honors went to Mike Combs of Roswell who ended up at 5-under par for the championship. He carded a final round 68, the low round of the day.
Defending champion, noted amateur Billy Mitchell from Roswell, finished tied for 17th place at 1-over par 145. Introduced last year and for just the second time in this championship was the Super Seniors Division, with PGA life member Bill Johnstone taking home first place with a score of 5-under 139 for the championship.
