Two Gwinnett County Police officers fired for punching and kicking an unarmed suspect during a traffic stop have been formally charged in the alleged crime.

Michael Bongiovanni, 42, and Robert McDonald, 25, have both been charged with one count each of misdemeanor battery and a felony violation of oath of office, according to a news release from the Gwinnett Police Department.

“The police department and its employees will continue to serve the citizens while maintaining our core values and highest level of professionalism,” said Chief Butch Ayers in a statement.

Bongiovanni has reportedly asked for his job back.

The local courts have dismissed 89 cases involving the two former officers.

The pair were fired April 13, when the video surfaced on social media.
