SUGAR HILL — The Gainesville track and field program set some lofty goals at the start of the season.

On Tuesday they saw those goals become reality.

"At the start of the year we set out for the boys to win the region title and for the girls to finish at least top three, and we did just that," said Red Elephants assistant track and field director PJ Davis after watching his boys claim the Region 8-AAAAAA crown and the Lady Red Elephants finish third at Lanier High in Sugar Hill.

"It's great to see these kids set goals and accomplish them. They've been through so much in a tough season and to come out on top is impressive. And for the girls team, which is so young, to finish third is outstanding too."

The Gainesville boys qualified 17 athletes for the state sectionals -- the top four finishers in each event earned berths in the April 29 meet, at which the top eight advance to the state finals. The Red Elephants also claimed six gold medals at the region finals, including two titles for Devonte Mize, who won the triple jump (44-feet-1.5) and 300 hurdles (39.90).

Hunter Mallard also continued his torrid pace, as the senior claimed the pole vault crown (15-0). Meanwhile, Tyree Robinson won the high jump (6-2) and the Red Elephants swept the distance races behind Alex Sosa (3,200 meters, 10:06) and Miguel Lopez (1,600, 4:39).

The Lady Red Elephants also enjoyed a strong showing, nabbing eight sectionals qualifying spots.

Tija Blackwell claimed a gold medal in the high jump (5-2), while Jada Harrison set a new school record in the 100 hurdles (15.92), finishing second in the process.

"We've got to focus over the next 11 days until sectionals; that's a long stretch," Davis said. "But it's also a blessing to get that recovery time."
