The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into an apparent officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon in Auburn.

According to a release from the GBI, Auburn police were called to a domestic dispute at a home on Wages Road in the Barrow County city when they found a woman claiming a male aggressor had ran into the woods behind the home.

Sergeant Jeff Scott with the Auburn Police Department then reportedly saw 46-year-old Stephen Frank Nicholas who claimed he was not the person police were looking for before police say he pulled a gun and fired at Scott. Scott returned fire and hit Nicholas several times. Nicholas was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center and is in serious condition, neither Scott nor any other officer was injured in the confrontation.

The GBI says it will conduct an investigation and then turn the case over to the Barrow County Detective's Office.

The Auburn Police Department requested the GBI's assistance.
