DEMOREST — The Piedmont College softball team split a doubleheader with Salem College Wednesday, dropping the first contest 4-3 and winning game two 2-0. The two are tied at the top of the USA South West Division standings boasting an 11-3 record.

Game one saw the Spirits take an early lead 2-0 in the top of the first and made it a 4-0 game in the fourth inning. It looked to be all Salem until the Lady Lions' bats came alive in the sixth inning with Piedmont scoring three runs on five hits with a pair of doubles and three singles.

The Lady Lions threatened again in the seventh inning as Allyson Gentry was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning but a double play ended the game and gave Salem the victory.

Game two was a different story as Melissa Eckman was commanding in the circle allowing just two hits in another shutout performance. Eckman also rang up 10 batters in the outing, the most the sophomore has had in her career with the Lady Lions.

Piedmont scored a single run in the third and fourth innings to secure the victory with 10 total hits in the contest led by Gentry and Audrey Esakoff accounting for three each.

The Lady Lions head to Ferrum College on March 24.
